Megan Hughes Counselling | Banbury, Oxfordshire
I am a Relational Integrative Counsellor. I use a combination of Person Centred, Psychodynamic and CBT techniques. Along with talking therapy I am also trained in creative therapeutic techniques, if clients would like to work creatively.
I am client-led, meaning that you decide what you would like to focus on and what goals you might have, and I will use my skills to help guide you.
I work with clients online and in-person.
I have a Bachelors Degree in psychology from The University of Birmingham. This means I have a strong basis for understanding how we learn, develop, build relationships and gain a sense of self.
I also Post-Graduate Diploma (Level 7) in Counselling from the University of Northampton.
I am a fully trained Counsellor for Adults.
I have a Certificate in Online and Telephone Counselling.
I have also completed CPD training in the following areas:
Anxiety
I have helped clients reduce intrusive thoughts; overcome decision / task paralysis; and to work through overthinking and rumination, excessive worrying and panic. Anxiety affects everyone differently and takes a variety of different forms.
I help people to understand their triggers, notice how their body is responding and find healthy coping strategies. We explore the anxiety at depth and work towards self-compassion.
Women's Issues
I work with clients to process and work through issues which are specific to women. I offer understanding and psychoeducation to clients around the impact of these issues on women's mental health.
I help women who are experiencing menopause to process changes and feelings which come with the symptoms and life changes related to menopause. This process can be painful and confusing, I offer a space of understanding and acceptance where clients can explore and process this change.
Another common issue which is raised in female clients is Motherhood. Motherhood relates to infertility, miscarriage or child loss; and in many cases, a loss or change of identity, difficulty to meet your personal needs, and societal pressures and norms; which can all contribute to emotional and mental distress. I have a compassionate feministic perspective on these issues which have historically been unacknowledged and unheard.
Relationships and Loneliness
Are you struggling to form healthy, lasting connections? Are you seeing unhealthy patterns repeating in your relationships? Do you feel lonely or overwhelmed by relationships?
I am a relational counsellor, this means I am trained to work with a person focusing on their relationships with others and themselves. I help clients to explore and understand how they relate and how this might impact the quality of connection.
Low Self-esteem
Do you feel like you are not good enough, a failure, weak or broken? Do you believe that you need to earn love or approval? Is it difficult to communicate your needs to others for fear of being a burden? Do you worry that if people see who you truly are, they will reject you?
I help clients with low self-esteem to reconnect with themselves; understand their negative self-beliefs, challenge them and practice self-compassion.
Stress and Life Changes
Whether you are moving, getting married or divorced, changing jobs, starting or ending university or becoming a new parent. Major life events and changes introduce higher levels of stress.
It can lead to feeling lost or not knowing who you are in your new life stage. I can help you to navigate these changes by listening to your story, and your feelings; so you can be completely yourself, without fear of judgement or "saying the wrong thing". This helps you to understand and connect with yourself through these changes.
Neurodiversity
I have experience working with Clients who have been diagnosed with Autism (ASD) and ADHD. In my training, I learnt which issues and ways of working might be more useful and effective, but on a whole the process is the same. We explore feelings, experiences and issues in a confidential non-judgemental space. I adjust according to each individual and what they need.
Loss and Grief
Loss can come in many forms, a relationship ending, death of a loved one or pet, loss of identity, loss of faith or religion, loss of purpose or a career. Whatever form it takes, we grieve. Grief can be more complicated for some than others, and we all grieve differently. I help clients to understand and express their feelings which accompany their loss. I give you a place where you can grieve without judgment or constraint but with acceptance and compassion.
